Details on pilot of DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME

I give this show two thumbs up. And if I had more thumbs, I would give it more! It was great. The scenario of the show centers around 3 couples. One divorced but they still have sex together. The best couple is Rob and Jessica (Matthew and Leah). They are married with 3 children. They both work and try to juggle the whole home, work, kids and sex thing. LOL The third couple is married and they have an issue with spanking their son. They did the whole "time out" thing but they got tired of their kid coloring the wall with crayons during time out. So they want to start "spanking." The husband (played by Jonathon Silverman) sees Rob (Matthew Lillard) and says him and his wife want to try "spanking" which causes Rob to think that they are getting kinky, which is what Rob wants from his wife Jessica (Leah). The first scene taped showed Rob and Jessica (Matthew and Leah) in bed. First we see Rob coming into the bedroom and telling Jessica he finally got all the kids (they have three kids! the youngest is two years old) to bed. He said, "Sex on a school night...I feel like I need to call somebody about this." In comes Jessica wearing nothing sexy to bed. Imagine Carrie Spooner in her pajama pants and top. Jessica has her hair very messy and cream on her face. Rob is not happy. Rob proceeds to want to take her pic and she asks why. Rob tells her he wants proof for later on when Jessica asks what happened to their sex life. She then quickly fixes her hair and removes the face cream. Rob is shocked. He asks her why does she fix herself up for a camera and not him. Jessica says, "This (pointing to the camera) is permanent! What we will do in bed will only last 8 minutes."

We then see the divorced couple. They are actually in the process of divorcing. We see them sign papers and immediately they begin to kiss passionately on the kitchen table. We are told in a later scene that they had sex on that table. Something that never occurred during marriage. Later on that same ex-husband (forgot his name) has sex with "Chloe's mom". He doesn't know the woman's name.

Back to Rob and wanting to have a better sex life with Jessica. He buys edible panties and shows them to his friend (the ex-husband). His friend asked him if he ever tasted them before. Rob says no. The friend says "What if you eat them and they don't taste good, imagine the look on your face when doing that?" the friend then makes this weird face. Rob then mentions eating Jessica's real underwear before. Rob takes out a pair (there were 3 edible panties in the box) and gives it to his friend to sample. Rob then takes one out for himself. It was so funny seeing them eat those edible panties... The friend says, "Mmmm bubblegum." Rob says, "Mmmmm raspberry." Then they both switch panties to sample. They did this scene three different ways so I don't know which one will end up in the actual pilot.

Sounds great so far. Can't wait for it to hit tv. Did you get to see a lot of mistakes? Did they have to use Laugh signs to get the audience to laugh? Wish I was there...

No there were no "laugh" signs. We were told to laugh at the obvious funny stuff. Also there were scenes that were already taped either earlier in the day or during the week. They played them back and we watched those scenes on several large flat screens. Imagine an outdoor scene on King of Queens. Ever wondered how they did the laughter of the audience on a scene like that? Well this is how they did it. They played that taped scene for us to watch and we were told to laugh at the obvious funny scenes, moments, comments, etc. They would replay the scene at least 3 times. My understanding is they wanted the best sounding audience laugh to insert into the final editing. There were at least 4 scenes that were already taped that we had to laugh to like that. One scene was the edible panty scene, another was outdoors at a soccer field. Another involved the final scene but I haven't discussed that part yet so I won't spoil it.

Matthew Lillard had a scene where he kept messing up and it was hilarious! I will talk about that when I get to that scene description. Leah did very well. She was on top of things. At one point Matthew started saying his lines and Leah said to the director, "Aren't you supposed to say ACTION first?"

I love the inside stuff that only comes from being at the taping.

I think with two obvious pro's like Leah & Mathew on board it has to get picked up. I really want Leah to be back in a hit show.

The next scene involved the two married ladies Jessica and Susan (don't know the blonde actress' name) as well as their husbands, at a soccer game where their boys play in matches. The ladies are off to the side discussing things when Susan offers Jessica some of her "punch". You know those juice boxes that the kids drink, well Susan hands over to Jessica (Leah) the box she is drinking from and Jessica is shocked to discover it is liquor. Then Susan says, "What's shocking is how I was able to get the alcohol through that little hole." Then Susan reaches to get her "juice" back but Jessica pushes her hand away while she continues to sip.

Well Rob and Jessica have two other issues going on in this pilot. They have an issue whether their 5 year old son should wipe his "wee wee" with toilet paper (Jessica's preferred method) or just "shake it" like daddy says it should be done. The other one is what should they do about their 7 year old daughter who caught them "doing the deed" in bed. The scene we saw was with Matthew and Leah in bed, it was made to look like they were naked and having sex. While they were canoodling with each other, Leah's character heard someone say "Mommy" and she panics and freezes. Matthew's character is on top of Leah and he is scared too. He quickly turns his head and we see a shot of the daughter standing there. The next scene we see is Rob and Jessica panicking in the kitchen the next morning wondering if their daughter will say anything. Jessica proceeded to ask her daughter what she wants for breakfast and she holds up a sausage on a fork while saying, "Sausage?" Quickly her husband Rob makes her put the sausage down. An all too obvious sexual reference. LOL We saw two different taped scenes. One had the daughter asking the parents outright, "Why was mommy on your side of the bed, daddy?" The other scene the daughter never asked.

Okay the next scene taped was when Jessica (Leah) wanted to spice things up, so she wore a thong! The scene began with Jessica pretending to be putting dishes in the dishwasher. She had the dishwasher door opened and she was bending over, making sure her thong string was showing. Then in walks in Rob who doesn't seem to notice. SHAME ON HIM! Jessica then walks over to the kitchen table and pretends to wipe the table but purposely bends over and sticks out her butt and again she makes sure her thong is showing. Again Rob doesn't notice. She confronts him about him about not noticing and he then begins to show her what he bought...the edible panties. She looks at the box and realizes they are not in there. Rob tells her he ate the raspberry flavored one, his friend ate the bubblegum flavored one and they shared the third pair.

The chemistry was great. At first I felt that bit of sadness that it was not Leah and Kevin together. It was like watching Carrie cheat on Doug. But shortly into the taping I began to get the feel for these characters as a couple. They were brilliant. And to see our beloved Leah playing a mother is FABULOUS!!!! It is something different and proves she can make the transition.

Ya see, that is the twist that I've predicted....Carrie will EVENTUALLY have an affair with guest star....Keven James...she'll get back together with him and it'll be back to King of Queens but with step children in the picture.
Really...that is where I think this thing is going. I WISH! Although I haven't seen it to give it a good enough chance yet with the new dude.

Ok back to the show. We have Gordon, the father who wants to start spanking his child but remember, him and his wife, Susan, have never done that. It was always time out. Gordon had complained to Rob how the child has behaved so well that there has not been an opportunity to test the "spanking method". Well finally Gordon comes upon his son and we see the child coloring the wall with various crayons. This is the moment. The next scene shows the child being taken to his bedroom with the door shut. Gordon calls Susan and Gordon says it is now time to spank the child. Gordon walks intot he bedroom and shuts the door. He immediately comes out and says he can't do it. Susan then enters the room and does the same thing. They both realize they can't spank the child.

I forgot about an early scene where Jessica is making eggs for the two kids. She served scrambled eggs to her two year old who proceeded to scream in this high-pitched voice, "I don't like that plate!" Jessica then scrapes the eggs off his plate and onto the table. The child then eats the eggs. That two year old boy was great!! I was amazed at how he was behaving and did his lines. However when the scene had to be taped several more times, he wasn't having it anymore. He began to get antsy and when this woman (not sure if it was his mother or a stage lady) she went to get him as he was hiding under the kitchen table, you know how little kids are when they don't want to be grabbed, he was moving around so quickly, the lady had a hard time grabbing him. It was so damn funny. It reminded me of someone trying to chase and grab a chicken that is running around loose.

Remember the ex-husband who is having sex with "Chloe's mom"? Well he goes over to see his ex (and have more sex he thinks), upon his arrival he is all happy and excited only to see his ex-wife all dressed up and ready to go out on a date with "Chloe's dad"... Apparently Gordon's wife, Susan (the mom who poured liquor into that juice box) had told her about her ex-husband going around talking.

Coming up to the final scenes we see Rob and Jessica sitting down with their daughter in their living room and wanting to explain to her what she saw in the bedroom. Jessica begins to tell her that when a man and woman are in love, they do special things together. The daughter (forgot her name sorry) she then asks, "Is it always a man and a woman?" Rob says "Yes" and Jessica at the same time says, "No." They then both look at each other. The faces they made were funny. Rob then begins to tell his daughter that no, it isn't always between a man and a woman. It was this scene here where Matthew Lillard had messed up so bad. He was stuttering and trying to say the line. He even motioned with his hand to not stop filming, he would get it right, but he kept getting the line mixed up. We were busting up. I have no idea how Leah kept a straight face. She knew the taping was still in process so I figure she was hoping the scene would eventually get done without having to stop the taping. Matthew wasn't laughing or anything, but was just trying to say his line, which only made the scene that much more real because it sounded like a father having a hard time discussing sex with his young daughter. Finally the talk gets to the point where Jessica, who hears her youngest crying for her, she immediately runs out of the living room leaving Rob to deal with this discussion. Rob looks worried and perplexed. He then pretends to hear his son crying for him and he runs out of the living room leaving the daughter all alone and wondering. This scene was filmed two different ways so I don't know which scene will make the cut.

Ok remember the issue of Rob and Jessica and whether their son should use tissue to wipe his "wee wee" or not? Rob had been telling his son to "don't use tissue" to clean himself. There is a scene where the boy is in the bathroom and he calls to his mom. Jessica goes into the bathroom. We see Rob walk over to the bathroom anxious to hear that his son did NOT use toilet paper to clean himself and instead did the "shake" method. Jessica opens the door while holding her son's hand. Rob asks if he used toilet paper. Jessica says, "No." Rob is elated and one happy man. He thinks he finally got his son to just "shake it" when he was done. Then Jessica informs Rob that oh yeah, he didn't use toilet paper and guess what? "He pooped!" Rob makes a face and as Jessica puts their son into his arms with her arms outstretched, Rob realizes he has to clean his son's butt because he didn't use toilet paper, he only "shaked it" after he was done.

The final scene had Rob and Jessica in bed ready to be "alone". When suddenly there is a knock on the door. Rob opens the door and sees the three kids. He asks what is the problem? Now remember, the parents never finished their "talk" with the daughter, so she was under the impression that mommy was cold, that is why she was on daddy's side of the bed. The oldest daughter tells her daddy, "We want to keep mommy warm." And then you see the kids climb into the bed with mommy. Rob makes a face. He then climbs into the bed and tries to get comfortable. Jessica then says to Rob, "This is an awkward moment." And Rob says, "What do you mean?" The daughter then sits up and says, "I smell Raspberry!"

We all started busting up laughing because we remembered the edible panties Rob had bought!



I have to add, I loved the deejay or sound guy, whatever his title was there. He played so many old school songs and they were played so loud, it felt like I was in a club. I was moving around in my chair so much! Every so often I would see Matthew Lillard dancing to some of the songs being played.
